Time, Space, and Moving Forms

Artist Catalog

Time, Space, and Moving Forms, Alexander Calder, is an 11x13 inch, 70-page bound book design that features the work of Alexander Calder. He was an American sculptor known for his static “stabiles,” monumental public sculptures, and innovative mobiles that embrace chance in their unique aesthetic.

Multidisciplinary Background

It was challenging to incorporate the large collection of art that Calder has created over his lifespan. The three chapters include “New Studies in Wire, True Kinetic Sculpture, and Large Abstracted Stabiles.” The single and double column structure is paired with artwork from different periods of Calder’s life. This establishes a system that adds harmony between typography and imagery. I used the Coptic stitch bookbinding method with an acrylic front and back cover to highlight and complement the movement and style of the artist’s work.
